San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a protected biotope located between the towns of Bakio and Bermeo. It is linked to the coast by a stone bridge and a stairway with 241 steps.
At the top of the islet there is a church that has been rebuilt many times. The original was built in the 9th century. 300 years later it became a convent and in the 15th century the friars abandoned it, taking with them all the valuables.
The place has great magical and historical symbolism, being the scene of pirate attacks by covens and legends… and they say that ringing the hermitage bell three times serves to attract good luck and drive away evil spirits.
According to legend. Saint John the Baptist saved the 241 stairs in three steps and his footprints can be seen on the ground.
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is internationally known for being one of the locations of the Game of Thrones series, so today, to avoid crowds, it is necessary to obtain a free ticket to visit.
