The Villa de Gernika is an emblematic place for Bizkaia and for the entire Basque Country. The suffering of the people in the bombing carried out by the fascist forces in the Civil War was immortalized by Pablo Picasso in one of his best-known paintings, Guernica.
The main symbol is the Tree of Gernika, next to which the General Meetings of Bizkaia are held. The oak represents the freedoms of the Basque People. In the town you can also visit the Casa de Juntas (where the tree is), the Church of Santa María and the Parque de los Pueblos de Europa, where you can admire the sculptures of Eduardo Chillida and Henry More. It is also possible to visit the Basque Museum and the museum of La Paz

Visit Gernika and the Tree of Gernika from Sopela
By metro – bus . 1 hour and 58 minutes.
Take the metro at any of the two stops in Sopela (Sopela and Larrabasterra), getting off at the Abando station in Bilbao. The journey takes approximately 35 minutes, with a frequency of 20 minutes.
In Abando, take the A3515 or A3514 Bizkaibus bus to the Geltokia / Estación stop. The journey takes 1 h and 10 m, with a frequency of 30 minutes.
By metro – train , 2 hours and 2 minutes.
Take the metro at any of the two stops in Sopela (Sopela and Larrabasterra), getting off at the Abando station in Bilbao.
From Abando we headed on foot to the Zazpikaleak / Casco Viejo Euskotren station. The distance is 600 m., traveling in approximately 7 minutes.
In the Zapikaleak / Casco Viejo of Euskotren, we took the train to the Gernika station, taking the journey approximately 54 minutes, with a frequency of every hour.
By own car or by taxi . 40 minutes for a distance of 34 km.
